Monastery of St Dominic in Collepardo: the monastic settlement prior to Trisulti
The Monastery of San Domenico (St Dominic) in Collepardo is the original settlement from which the more famous Certosa di Trisulti (Trisulti Charterhouse) arose. Founded in 996 by Benedictine monk Domenico da Foligno, today we can only see its ruins, just a few hundred yards from the Certosa.
A deer, a cave and a monastery
In 983 AD, Domenico arrived at Trisulti together with another monk, Giovanni. They took shelter in a cave at the foot of Monte Porca. There followed three years of absolute silence, until a deer, chased by hunters, sought refuge in the cave, and revealed the Saint's hiding place. From that moment on, people began to seek him out. In 987, inspired by an angel who appeared to him at night, Domenico descended from the hermitage and began building a church dedicated to St Bartholomew, which was completed in 996.
Numerous miracles and a growing reputation
Numerous miracles are attributed to the Saint. We recall here the one that occurred during the construction of the monastery, when a boulder broke loose from the mountain and was stopped by Domenico with the sign of the cross. Then there was a noblewoman who was suffering from a haemorrhage, and was instantly healed after drinking water brought by the saint. These wondrous stories caused his fame to spread far beyond the borders of Ciociaria.
Practical information
The ruins are located along the road leading from the Certosa di Trisulti to the hamlet of Civita. The feast day is celebrated on 22 August, the date on which, in 1104, the saint was raised to the glory of the altar.
