Hermitage of the Holy Saviour in Castel di Tora: the little rock church on Lake Turano
On the peninsula of Monte Antuni, overlooking Lake Turano, lies the Eremo di San Salvatore (Hermitage of the Holy Saviour). It is a small rupestrian church, enclosing a natural cave where a hermit once lived. This place, part of the medieval village of Antuni in the municipality of Castel di Tora, offers a unique panorama and the story of simple, ancient faith. It is somewhere truly special.
A ghost village and its rebirth
The hermitage forms part of the village of Antuni, abandoned since 1944 following a bombing raid during the Second World War. Today the entire area is a silent place, almost ghostly, but it is slowly coming back to life thanks to restoration works and guided visits. To reach the little church you must pass through the village’s alleyways — an experience that prepares you for what lies ahead.
Inside the saint's cave
Once inside, the space is minimal. The atmosphere is that of the original cave, hewn from the rock. On the left you can still make out the stone pallet where the saint slept, while on the right a small altar preserves a fresco. A second painting can be seen above the entrance door.
Access to the village of Antuni and to the hermitage is usually possible only through guided visits. It is essential to check visiting arrangements and opening times in advance by contacting the Pro Loco or the Municipality of Castel di Tora.
