L'Aquila, Italian Capital of Culture 2026
The city and its rebirth
Artistic experimentation as a catalyst for the creation of a culturally-based socio-economic recovery model able to propel L'Aquila into the future. This is the focal point of a project that has helped the city win the title of Italian Capital of Culture 2026. L'Aquila is transforming into a Multiverse City that aims to strengthen the relationship between the urban centre, inland areas and surrounding villages with strong cultural and social identities, while also involving other areas such as Rieti, which will play an important role in the programme of activities planned for 2026.
Discover the events
L'Aquila is gearing up for a special year as Italian Capital of Culture, with a packed calendar of events, exhibitions, concerts and shows showcasing local history, art and traditions, while also boosting innovation and creativity. A unique opportunity to rediscover the city and its architectural and natural beauty. Among the most notable initiatives is "Palazzi Aperti", which, on one Sunday every month until the end of 2026, will open historic residences to citizens and visitors, providing an opportunity to discover the extensive architectural heritage that has helped shape the urban and social identity of L’Aquila.
Musica Per-Formare: dialogue between the arts, culture and the future
The Musica Per-Formare project hosts public outreach events exploring the dialogue between music, literature and other disciplines, promoting multidisciplinarity and the identity of L’Aquila as a Multiverse city. A number of events explore the relationship between music, people, new technologies and artificial intelligence. One of the main initiatives, "L’Orchestra Jazz Che Vorrei L’Aquila – Note nel Multiverso" offers an educational music programme for primary and lower secondary school pupils in the local area from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, with a particular focus on social inclusion, in collaboration with the Conservatorio "Alfredo Casella".
Ambassadors of culture
The "Ambasciatori della Cultura per L’Aquila 2026" project is designed to empower shopkeepers, business owners, sports and cultural associations, and all citizens who work with the public on a daily basis to become key figures in telling the story of their city. Thanks to the free courses provided by the Administration, they will play a key role in welcoming visitors and raising awareness of the city's historical and artistic heritage and identity.
