Overview
It was the writer Gabriele D'Annunzio who commissioned the monumental complex known as Il Vittoriale degli Italiani. The complex, which includes various buildings, an open-air theatre, streets, squares, gardens and watercourses, was created and built between 1921 and 1938 on the Brescian side of Lake Garda. The estate covers nine hectares of hillside, offering the visitor a beautiful panorama. You are in Gardone Riviera, a municipality in Lombardy that is part of the Regional Park of Upper Garda.
Today, the name 'Vittoriale', now a Foundation, is often used to refer to thehome of D'Annunzio, who lived here since 1921 and was buried here. The top of the Vittoriale is occupied by the mausoleum, a funeral monument built after the writer's death and inspired by the Etruscan-Roman style.
The Vittoriale complex offers museums, a park, an amphitheatre, the Auditorium and the Prioria, which tells the daily life of D'Annunzio but also the history of his stately residence, illustrating the highlights of the building's history which includes an awe-inspiring private library containing thirty-three thousand volumes.
Visits are only allowed with the guide, and tours take approximately thirty-five minutes.
