In the winter park, excursions through the Friulian Dolomites and the Julian Prealps
2 minutes
The mountains of Friuli Venezia Giulia are home to two natural paradises, different from one another yet both spectacular in winter as well as in summer, and just waiting to be discovered.
Friulian Dolomites: the wildest winter in the Alps
The Friulian Dolomites, protected by the eponymous park that covers around 37,000 hectares, are considered the most untouched part of the entire Dolomite range due to the high degree of wilderness they still preserve. For this reason, they are a paradise for hikers and mountaineers, as well as enthusiasts of Nordic walking and free climbing. Their spires, often compared to churches and bell towers, reflect the colors of the sunset and are favorites among photographers. The park has no inhabited centers or paved roads and is closed to cars.
A unique natural mosaic: exploring the Prealpi Giulie in winter
In contrast, the territory of the Prealpi Giulie Park is more anthropized, and one of its main features is precisely the balance between humans and nature that has developed over the centuries. The park is of great geological, naturalistic, and scenic interest: in close proximity, distinct landforms coexist, with riverine features alongside typically glacial ones. In the upper parts of the valleys, ancient glacial arches are still perfectly preserved, while in the valley floors, numerous gorges and waterfalls create spectacular rapids and cascades. A defining characteristic of the area is the intersection of three different biogeographical regions—Mediterranean, Illyrian, and Alpine—which together create an extraordinary biodiversity, reflected in a particularly rich and varied floral and faunal heritage.
Snowshoeing for everyone: discovering the Friulian mountains step by step
The two parks organize numerous excursions throughout the winter season, allowing visitors to enjoy the magnificent natural landscapes while also discovering their unique features. Walks with snowshoes, the traditional snow footwear, are the best way to move along snow-covered trails in the winter tranquility of the forests. These excursions are suitable for everyone, including families, and are always very diverse: panoramic snowshoe hikes to admire the mountain scenery, nature-focused walks to observe winter vegetation and wildlife, twilight excursions to immerse in the enchanting colors, or nighttime walks under the moonlight with the help of small torches.
Ski mountaineering in Friuli Venezia Giulia: snow, silence, and zero impact
The parks also offer more challenging activities for those who are physically fit. Among these, ski mountaineering provides exclusive opportunities for anyone wishing to connect with authentic nature while having zero environmental impact: no ski lifts are needed to practice this sport, and Friuli Venezia Giulia offers a wide range of routes.
