Laino Castello Vecchio

Overview

Laino Castello stands on a rocky rise (270 metres above sea level) and is surrounded by the Lao River. The nucleus of this splendid and historical village is characterized by alleys, steps, buildings and noble palaces. A scenery enriched by hand-carved stone portals displaying the blazon of the original families. The Mother Church of San Teodoro, of Byzantine origin, flaunts a marvellous mediaeval tower and is certainly a monument of high architectural value. It houses valuable works of art such as the altarpieces of the high altar, the baptismal font dating back to 1500 and the wooden triptych depicting the Madonna and Child, restored and preserved in the Diocesan Museum of Cassano allo Jonio. Also worth visiting are the Church of the Virgins from the 1500s and the Chapel of Santa Maria degli Scolari, which houses a Renaissance fresco of the Madonna seated on a throne.
