Rotonda

Overview

Rotonda, the municipality that houses the headquarters of the Ente Parco del Pollino (Pollino Park Authority), has a fairly clear division, with a medieval core where the castle stands and a more recent area in the valley. In Rotonda is also located the Pollino Naturalistic and Palaeontological Museum, where fossils of prehistoric animals found in the area, including the Elephas antiquus, can be viewed. In June, the Sagra dell'Abete (Fir Festival) is held: a beech tree (´a pitu') and a silver fir (´a rocca') are joined in marriage, in what is one of the typical arboreal rites of Basilicata, first felled and then towed by oxen. Once in the village, they are grafted onto each other and raised with ropes and wooden forks. The typical product of Rotonda is the PDO red aubergine, characterized by its particular intense orange colour.
