Chiaromonte

Overview

Built by the Normans between the 9th and 10th centuries AD on the remains of a pre-existing Prehistoric settlement, the historic centre of Chiaromonte stands proudly on a rocky outcrop. The town, which has the shape of an amphitheatre, is enriched by the Mother Church of San Giovanni, which houses a fine wooden statue of the "Madonna and Child" created by an unknown sculptor between the 12th and 13th centuries, Palazzo Sanseverino (1319) and the Bishop's Palace (1609). Other points of interest are the 18th-century Tower of the Castle of Jura, the Church of St. Thomas the Apostle, and last but not least the Archaeological Anthropological Museum " Ludovico Nicola di Jura", a centre for community research into cultural heritage. The centre brings together two different strands of research, ancient anthropology and Enotrian archaeology, and preserves the numerous finds brought to light during archaeological excavations in the local area.

A new and interesting attraction is, of course, the picturesque wine trail, which takes you on a tour of the many wine cellars carved from the rocks surrounding the boundary of the town - what better place to sample a glass of the excellent local wine.
