Bernalda

Overview

A medieval town in the province of Matera

An unmissable stop for anyone visiting Basilicata, Bernalda is a charming medieval village a stone’s throw from the beaches and woods of Metaponto. There are countless places of interest and activities to make your stay unforgettable.

Start with a stroll through the atmospheric historic centre, where it feels as though time stands still. You will be enchanted by the sites and monuments, including the simple lines and fascinating charm of the Mother Church of San Bernardino. In August, you can attend the festival in honour of the town’s patron saint, with processions of horse-drawn carriages, flag-wavers and archbishops in period costumes, rounded off with a fireworks display.

Don’t miss a walk to the 15th-century castle, stopping along the way to admire the views surrounding you. The Nature Reserve in Metaponto, a wild and fascinating land, boasts 240 hectares of Mediterranean scrubland that is best explored on foot or by bicycle. On this journey between nature and history, be sure to stop by the Metaponto Archaeological Park, to walk among the remains of temples, theatres, agorae and necropolises.
