Overview
In the heart of the Abruzzo National Park, among centuries-old beech forests and mountain meadows, in Pescasseroli stands the Sanctuary of Monte Tranquillo. Reachable through a comfortable, rather steep path near the arrival, the building is located on a hill that gives you a breathtaking 360-degree view of the spectacle of the surrounding nature.
Dedicated to the Black Madonna, the Sanctuary of Monte Tranquillo is much more than a simple religious destination: it is a meeting point between the populations of the surrounding valleys and the various visitors. This is also demonstrated by the annual procession that, on the last Sunday of July, sees the participation not only of the inhabitants of Pescasseroli, but also of the neighboring communities and tourists.
The Marian shrine was erected in the twelfth century: a place of shelter and trade in the seventeenth century, it suffered numerous damages due to earthquakes over the centuries and the bombings of the Second World War, until it became usable again in the 1950s.
It is the ideal destination for trekking lovers and offers unforgettable excursions, in the shade of lush beech forests, in unspoilt vegetation.
