Campo Imperatore

Overview

The great plateau in the heart of Abruzzo

The vast plateau of Campo Imperatore is the ideal destination for holidays and escapes from the city in both summer and winter. Located in the heart of the Gran Sasso massif, it is one of the most enchanting places in Abruzzo.

The plateau, also known as the “Little Tibet” of Abruzzo, stretches for about twenty kilometres, with a width ranging from three to seven kilometres, reaching an altitude of 1,900 metres, while all around stand the highest peaks of the Apennines, such as Corno Grande, Scindarella and Monte Portella.

During the winter season, one can whizz down the slope on skis, taking advantage of the facilities of the Gran Sasso - Campo Imperatore ski resort with a total of 20 kilometres of slopes. Cross-country skiers will be able to indulge in the 60 kilometres of looped trails that wind along the plateau.

When the snow melts, the Campo Imperatore plateau reveals its second face: the one made up of colourful landscapes, endless pastures and long trails that amaze even the most experienced trekkers.
