Radicofani Fortress

Overview

A charming castle in the most scenic spot in the Val d’Orcia

The Val d’Orcia is one of the most magical places in Tuscany: a vast hilly area with towns of rare splendour, such as Pienza and Montalcino. Among the many vantage points from which you can enjoy a unique view, one beats them all: the Radicofani Fortress, built in the 10th century on a large basalt rock, 896 metres high at the highest point of the entire Val d’Orcia.

For centuries disputed, besieged, damaged and restored, today the Radicofani Fortress presents itself to its visitors in the configuration it assumed at the end of the 16th century. Thanks to major restoration work carried out since 1980, those who decide to visit the ancient fortress can enjoy an itinerary that takes you through underground passages leading to the five bastions, up to the keep and the tower, which houses an interesting archaeological museum over three floors, with exhibits dating from the Bronze Age onwards.

Also not to be missed is a walk in the large park surrounding the fortress and the nearby medieval village at the foot of the hill, ideal for lunch or a refreshing stop after your visit.
