Saint Ephysius: the most engaging festival in Sardinia

Overview

In Sardinia, every year, from 1st to 4th May, Saint Ephysius festival brings together faithful, traditional dress and the colors of all of island in a majestic procession that covers 80 kilometres.
The pilgrimage begins in Cagliari with thousands of devotees coming from all over the island, who parade by foot, horse or on traccas, carts decorated with flowers and fruit, pulled by oxen with their horns adorned with garlands of flowers.
Saint Ephysius festival is not only one of the largest religious, cultural and identity manifestation of Sardinia: it is above all a solemn promise made on 11 July 1652 by the city of Cagliari to its protector. Since then, the promise has always been honored, every spring, for more than 350 years, with deep devotion and sincere gratitude.

In every town in Sardinia, devotees dedicate every care to traditional dresses, often ancient and precious, handed down for generations. One of the most exciting moments is the morning of May 1st, when the golden chariot comes out into the small square and the streets are covered by arramadura: a colorful and fragrant carpet of petals and fragrant essences.
