Overview
The remains of the city walls of the church of S. Maria della Calena, which enclose a cloister, two churches and some dormitories, are located behind the small harbour, on the wide plain of Calena. Part of a monastic complex probably dating back to before the 11th century, they were a necessary stop for mediaeval pilgrims on their way to Monte Sant'Angelo. It was contested by the powerful monasteries of St Nicholas and Montecassino until 1445 when it was definitively incorporated into the Tremiti Abbey.
