Overview
Orange Flag of the Italian Touring Club
Small but lively, Cocconato is a village that features one of the best-preserved and restored historic centers in the Asti area.
The town develops from the central and vibrant Piazza Cavour, lively with many cafes, restaurants, and shops selling local products. From here, you can walk along Via Roma to reach the higher part of the town, made up of old houses with wrought iron balconies and carved wooden doors, eventually arriving at the Palazzo Comunale from the 15th century, the most important monument of the village and a rare example of civil Gothic architecture from Monferrato. The building follows the path of the street, with three floors of arcades on the outside and two floors in the internal courtyard. The Parrocchiale, dedicated to Santa Maria della Consolazione, can be reached by walking the steep cobblestone streets, offering panoramic views of the town and the surrounding hills.
In September, during the "Cocco Wine" food and wine event, the historic center becomes a large tasting area for wines and local food products (including the famous Robiola, a soft, raw milk, fatty cheese). During the Palio degli asini, the village changes its appearance and transforms into an ancient medieval town.
