Malpaga Castle

Overview

Medieval charm in Cavernago

Only 12 kilometres away from Bergamo there is a city that boasts an enviable record: two castles in one place. Nestled in the beautiful Serio River Park, Cavernago is home to both the castle of the same name and Malpaga Castle.

Both have to do with the life of Bartolomeo Colleoni. The iconic commander of the Venetian Republic bought the former in 1473 and the latter became his residence, still considered one of the most exclusive buildings in Lombardy thanks to its rooms frescoed by local and French masters, its shaded loggias, ornate coffered ceilings and still functioning fireplaces.

You can immerse yourself in a Thousand and One Nights atmosphere of this fortress by booking a guided tour or a medieval dinner. Those ready to tie the knot can also include it among the most romantic wedding locations in Lombardy. A small church is located a few steps away from the castle, while the inner halls create an enchanting atmosphere for civil weddings.

A reminder for those staying in town in August: every year the castle hosts the Palio di Malpaga, culminating in the traditional historical re-enactment with costumed characters taking the village back to the time of the Colleoni family.
