On the eastern shore of Lake Como, Bellano, in addition to its interesting historical and cultural attractions, is also an excellent starting point for excursions on the lake and inland. Not to be missed is a visit to the Orrido, a natural gorge created about 15 million years ago by the Pioverna stream, whose waters have modelled gigantic potholes and suggestive caverns. Places to visit include the church of Saints Nazzaro and Celso, in late Romanesque style and a national monument, and the 14th-century church of S. Marta where you can admire the 16th-century wooden group by Giovanni Angelo Del Maino depicting the Deposition. In the hamlet of Lezzeno, in a beautiful panoramic position, is the Baroque Sanctuary built in 1688. Events include the Pesa Vegia, a re-enactment celebrated on Epiphany night and attracting numerous spectators.
