Cadimare

Overview

The maritime origins of this hamlet of the city of La Spezia are already apparent from its name: the village was originally, in fact, a small group of houses facing the sea, from which the first toponym, 'Cà da mare', later Italianised into its present name, originated. There is a curiosity that is still told about this stretch of sea: in the bay that the village overlooks, there used to be a drinking water spring about six metres in diameter, but it was later disturbed by some work that affected the area. Today, the seafaring identity of this village remains in its small houses leaning against each other, as traditionally happens in fishing villages, and also... in a very special festival! Every year, the Palio del Golfo, a rowing challenge in which the boats of the thirteen maritime borgate of the gulf participate, is held in La Spezia. Cadimare is the borgata with the most victories, in the senior and junior categories. On the Friday evening before the races, all the borgate parade through the streets of La Spezia and each one chooses a theme, related to the district or the entire city, and creates the clothes, floats and choreography.
