The Church of St Mary of the Assumption

The Church of St Mary of the Assumption in Trevignano Romano: the fresco from the School of Raphael

Located in the heart of Trevignano Romano on the shores of Lake Bracciano, the Church of Santa Maria Assunta was built in the early years of the 16th century by the Orsini family. Radically renovated between 1786 and 1794, the building comprises a single nave supported by four grey granite columns, which were salvaged from the now-destroyed Church of Saints Peter and Paul.

The fresco from the School of Raphael

The apse is entirely covered by a monumental fresco dating to 1517 that depicts the Dormition of the Virgin. The work is attributed to Pellegrino Aretusi, known as "Pellegrino da Modena", a prominent pupil of Raphael. It stands as one of the few frescoes of the period to incorporate two accurate topographical representations: on the right side, it shows the ancient Castle of Trevignano (which has since disappeared), and in the background, Lake Bracciano and its shoreline. This makes the piece a vital historical record as well as a masterpiece of art.

Other artworks

The first altar on the right houses a 14th-century wooden statue of the Madonna Enthroned with Child; unfortunately, the Christ Child figure was stolen a few years ago, and has not been recovered. The second chapel on the left contains a fresco depicting the Virgin Mary between St Anthony of Padua and St Jerome, likely executed by the same artist who painted the apse. Positioned above the main entrance is the 18th-century choir loft, complete with its original organ.
