The Paper Makers’ Village in Subiaco is an immersive and interactive museum dedicated to the centuries-old history of paper production in the Papal States and, in particular, the history of the glorious Subiaco paper mill, founded in 1587 by Pope Sixtus V Peretti, which remained in operation until 2004. The museum brings it back to life not only through an exhibition of objects and artefacts from various eras, but also by recreating the actual production process, in which visitors can participate. It is located just outside the historic centre, in the former Mulino Carlani, near the banks of the River Aniene, in an area also popular with rafting enthusiasts. Inside the mill, all the machinery that used to power an ancient paper mill has been reconstructed, from the maceration tanks to the vats, from the presses to the drying racks, from the hammers to the water wheels that powered them. But there is more: visitors can take part in the workshops at the Arts and Crafts Centre to learn about the art of decorating an illuminated manuscript or binding a book, thanks to courses and workshops open to all.
