Piazza Mazzini Garden-Fountain

Piazza Mazzini Garden-Fountain: a modern nymphaeum fed by the Acqua Vergine

In the centre of Piazza Mazzini, in the Della Vittoria district of Rome, the grand garden-fountain was completed in 1927 by architect Raffaele De Vico, with sculptures by Ermenegildo Luppi. De Vico conceived it as a tribute to the nymphaea of ancient Rome, placing it in the centre of an urban green space, where radial avenues converge.

The walkway and the basin

Surrounding the octagonal basin, a walkway paved with pebble mosaics (made of gravel and river stones) depicts radiant suns, sails, tritons, cornucopias, and zodiac signs. Four columns stand at the corners of the basin, surmounted by Roman eagles. The exterior bases feature dragons in relief with the inscription "Acqua Trevi": the fountain is supplied by the Acqua Vergine, the same ancient aqueduct that feeds the Trevi Fountain. On the inner side, five cascading shells pour water; at the base, two aquatic creatures emerge from the basin, directing a jet of water towards the centre. The fountain was recently restored as part of the PNRR Caput Mundi programme.
