Church of the Most Holy Annunciation in Roccasecca: the Baroque collegiate church overlooking the valley
In Roccasecca, in the heart of the old village, the Chiesa SS. Annunziata looks out over the valley from a commanding panoramic position. Its origins date back to the mid-15th century, but the building visible today is a 1750 reconstruction in full Baroque style, which preserves within its walls an ancient organ.
The façade’s statues and the church's history
In the 17th century it became a "Collegiate" church, before being awarded the title of "insigne" (eminent, or distinguished) in 1843. The façade is surmounted by statues of the two saints of greatest importance to the local community: St Thomas and St Peter Martyr, the patron saint of the town.
The Latin cross interior
The interior has a Latin cross plan with three naves. The eye is drawn upwards, where the dome and the central apse are adorned with frescoes. In the choir loft — the balcony above the entrance — the ancient organ still stands in its original place. The sacristy is also worthy of a visit.
