Castle of the Counts of Aquino in Roccasecca: the birthplace of St Thomas Aquinas
In Roccasecca, in the province of Frosinone, the Castle of the Counts of Aquino is one of the most significant historical and archaeological sites as regards the Middle Ages in the Lazio region. It was founded in 994 by Mansone, abbot of Montecassino, as a bulwark against the Lombards. Two centuries later, St Thomas Aquinas was born within these walls.
From the defence of Montecassino to the Aquino family
The castle began as a monastic fortification, and later passed to the lords of Aquino, who made it their residence. It was here, in 1224, that the child destined to become one of the greatest Christian philosophers came into the world. This fact alone is enough to explain why this place is far more than a mere ruin.
What can be seen today
What remains of the old complex? The main entrance on the western side, and in the inner courtyard the large cistern used to collect rainwater. Outside the walls is the Cannon Tower, a tall watchtower. Tradition has it that St Thomas Aquinas was imprisoned here after his captivity at Monte San Giovanni Campano.
