The Church of St Agapitus: the bell-gable and a 17th-century treasure
Sometimes the most fascinating discoveries are hidden in the most unassuming of places. Such is the case with the Church of Sant'Agapito, a parish church that at first glance might appear modest, yet conceals two details of considerable charm, capable of capturing the attention of the most observant visitor.
The first reveals itself from the outside: its bell-gable, which is not the usual solid, stately tower, but a stone wall that soars towards the sky, the bells set into it like jewels embedded directly in the masonry. It is a rare and charming architectural feature that gives the building a unique, almost weightless profile, setting it apart from any other church in the surrounding area.
Once the threshold is crossed, the church unveils its second treasure: a precious 17th century painting. The work, attributed to the renowned Roman school, bears witness to the artistic richness that once circulated throughout these lands, bringing a touch of artistic greatness to an intimate and contemplative setting.
As this is an active parish church, visiting hours may coincide with liturgical celebrations. Visitors are advised to enquire on site before their visit.
