Civic Museum of Rieti: the archaeological section in the former monastery of Santa Lucia
The archaeological section of the Civic Museum of Rieti occupies the ground floor of the former monastery of Santa Lucia, located in Via Sant'Anna no. 4. The artefacts on display come from Rieti and the Sabina region, and cover a very long time span: from protohistory to the early Middle Ages. It is one of two sections of the city museum, together with the historical-artistic section housed in the Palazzo Comunale (Town Hall).
What you can see in the rooms
The itinerary is organised by theme rather than chronology. The rooms are called "Life, Death, Religion", "The Stone Library" and "The City". The highlight of the visit is definitely a relief fragment depicting a venatio scene: a fight between wild beasts and armed men, of the kind staged in the games of the arena. It was part of a funerary monument.
The Sabine Wing, the cloister and the garden
Opened in 2007, this wing occupies rooms 8 to 13, and brings together the finds from the most recent excavations. It shows how the inhabitants of the area lived and where they buried their dead, from protohistory to the Roman era. The visit also includes the cloister of the former monastery and the inner garden, onto which the Multipurpose Hall opens — the venue for cultural activities of the municipality and for the Lazio Region's ABC Atelier "Racconti Contemporanei" (Contemporary Tales).
