The Arts and Crafts Museum in Poggio Mirteto: a Time Machine in the former Courthouse
In Poggio Mirteto, in the very old building that once housed the Pretura — the local magistrates' court — there is a genuine time machine: the Museo delle Arti e dei Mestieri, a place that does not merely display objects, but brings to life the vanished trades and everyday existence of a century ago. This is no dusty collection. Here, everything is in working order, ready to tell its story.
The stories of Poggio Mirteto in one place
The museum is not a generic assortment of artefacts. This is a place where the history of the town can be felt in the air. On display are glassware from the historic Faiella glassworks and the original furnishings of the old Farmacia Laus pharmacy — genuine fragments of daily life. Tucked away in one corner, there are even documents and relics from the former courthouse that once occupied these rooms.
From the field to the workshop
The rooms offer a blast into the past. Visitors can see reconstructions of the blacksmith's forge, and the workshops of the cobbler, the coppersmith, and the farrier. Then there are the tools used to make wine and olive oil, weighing scales for measuring grain, and hand-operated washing machines. Everything is authentic. Everything has a story to tell.
The museum is run by the association "Il Nuovo Mirto". For opening hours, tickets and visiting arrangements, visitors are advised to consult the official channels of the association or of the Municipality of Poggio Mirteto, as details may be subject to change.
