The Church of St Nicholas in Piedimonte San Germano: Reborn out of the Rubble of War
The Church of San Nicola stands in Piazza Vittorio Veneto, in the upper part of Piedimonte San Germano, a municipality built at the foot of Monte Cairo in the province of Frosinone. The church has been rebuilt: the original building was razed to the ground during the Second World War, when the entire area around Montecassino was devastated by bombing.
Connection with the Monastery of Cicogna
Before its destruction, the church was annexed to the Monastery of San Nicola della Cicogna (St Nicholas of Cicogna), located in the nearby municipality of Villa Santa Lucia. Almost nothing remains of the original structure. The postwar reconstruction did, however, recover some elements from that monastery, incorporating them into the new building.
The Interior today
The present church has a single nave in the Baroque style. On the high altar is the statue of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, to whom the building is now dedicated, even though the name of San Nicola has remained in common use. A large forecourt precedes the entrance façade, and offers a fine view of the valley below.
