The Hermitage of Archangel St Michael in Morro Reatino: the church carved into the rock
The Eremo di San Michele Arcangelo is a natural cave transformed into a church, nestled within the local woodland. Located in the Coste Lignano area among oaks and chestnut trees, it houses frescoes dating from the 15th and 16th centuries.
A man-made expansion of a natural cavity
While the cave is a natural formation, it was later expanded and adapted to serve as a place of prayer. Although there are no definitive documents regarding its founding date, the frescoes still visible on the walls date back to the 15th and 16th centuries. Above the altar, a Madonna and Child is depicted alongside Archangel St Michael, the saint to whom the hermitage is dedicated.
The May hike
Every year, on selected Sundays in May, the Municipality organises a public hike to reach the hermitage. The trail begins in the village, and climbs through the woods up to the cave.
