The Ancient Nomentum-Eretum Way: Roman paving, nature and a necropolis in Tor Mancina
Located in the Tor Mancina area, within the Macchia di Gattaceca and Macchia del Barco Nature Reserve, lies one of the most important archaeological sites in the Monterotondo territory. Established in 2002 and managed by the Mentana-Monterotondo branch of Archeoclub d'Italia, the site is comprised of 140 metres of limestone paving (basolato) from the ancient road connecting Nomentum (modern-day Mentana) to Eretum, thereby linking the Via Nomentana and Via Salaria.
The road and the burial ground
Excavations got under way in 2008 under the direction of the Superintendency, and have continued since 2017 by means of a ministerial concession. They have brought to light a pavement featuring clear ruts left by chariot wheels and basalt wedges used to stabilize the stones. On the eastern side of the road lies an Imperial-era burial ground (1st century BC – 3rd century AD): a private funerary enclosure containing various types of tombs, ranging from modest burials to monumental structures. The findings are currently on display at the Monterotondo Archaeological Museum.
