Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Montelibretti: the parish church of the "Casali" district
The Church of the Madonna del Carmine is located in Piazza Chiesa Nuova, in the modern heart of Montelibretti. It has been an independent parish since November 14, 1914, when it separated from the mother church of San Nicola di Bari in the Castle. The first chapel dates back to the second half of the 18th century, built for the Casali community, which by then was quite a distance from the churches of the historic center.
From chapel to parish church
Population growth necessitated a bigger place of worship. The 19th-century building was inaugurated at the end of the 1800s by Cardinal Serafini. It had six side altars, reused columns (spolia)—traditionally believed to have come from older religious buildings—vaults, and an organ located on a loft.
20th-century restorations
In the late 1970s, a radical intervention modified the interior: the side altars were removed, the high altar and tabernacle were replaced, and the ancient columns and vaults were demolished. The floor was also redone, and the original baptismal font and organ loft were eliminated. While the church gained in functionality, its original look was significantly altered.
