MusAq, the Golden Eagle Museum: finding out about the raptor of the Lucretili Mountains
MusAq, located in Civitella di Licenza, more specifically in the locality of La Posta, is a museum devoted entirely to the golden eagle (Aquila chrysaetos) that nests on Monte Pellecchia, in the heart of the Lucretili Mountains Regional Nature Park. Established in the year 2000, the museum explores the biology, habitat and symbolic significance of a species at risk of extinction, indeed it has disappeared from all the mountain ranges surrounding Rome. The pair of Pellecchia eagles are the last remaining ones.
A museum that looks towards the nest
The exhibition adopts a "zoocentric" perspective: the visitor enters the world of the eagle. Three sections explore the reference ecosystem, biological aspects and the cultural role played by the raptor throughout history. On the first floor, the Environmental Experimentation Centre, developed in collaboration with the CNR Institute of Cognitive Sciences and Technologies, offers digital simulations of ecological dynamics and software that reproduces the experience of flight.
The trail to the observatory
From the museum, a waymarked trail climbs to the Nest Observatory: one hour and thirty minutes there and back, from 650 to 800 metres above sea level. From up there, the view takes in the Lucretili and Simbruini mountains and the Aniene Valley. With a little luck, the two birds can be seen in flight.
