Church of Our Lady of the Snows in Labro: the 15th-century church of the former convent, now a resort
In Labro, a village perched in the hills of Rieti overlooking Lake Piediluco, the church of Santa Maria della Neve (Our Lady of the Snows) is located outside the walls, near the cemetery, along the road to Leonessa. The façade is sober, featuring a triangular pediment, a carved stone portal, and a rose window without tracery. Built in the 15th century, the convent of the Observant Franciscans was added two centuries later.
From worship to conferences
Following post-war depopulation, the complex fell into disrepair. Restoration work has brought it back to life through adaptive reuse: today, it is part of a hospitality facility with rooms for events and congresses. The church remains open for worship however. The interior features three naves divided by arches on columns; on the altar, the painting of the Virgin and Child was reconstructed from fragments of the original fresco discovered during restoration work.
