The Isola del Liri River Park: waterfalls, history and walking on water
In Isola del Liri, water is the true protagonist. The Parco Fluviale di Isola del Liri is a walkway that follows the course of the River Liri from the heart of the city. A unique route that winds its way between the remains of ancient paper mills and the spectacular 27-metre-high Valcatoio Waterfall. It is the best way to understand the soul of this place.
From the noise of the city to the silence of the river
The route begins at the Ponte di Roma bridge. A few steps in and you are already immersed in greenery. Here, among fountains and old industrial machinery — testament to the past of a town built on paper-making — you can admire the waterfall in all its power. The air fills with water vapour, and the noise of traffic disappears, replaced by the sound of the water.
Towards the confluence and the ancient abbey
Moving past the Boncompagni-Viscogliosi castle, the path becomes wilder. You walk along the riverbank until you reach the remains of an ancient wool mill and then, a little further on, what remains of the Ponte Marmone from the Roman era. The final destination is a special place: the exact point where the river Fibreno joins the river Liri, near the Abbey of San Domenico (St Dominic).
Being a public area, the route is always accessible and free of charge. The start of the path is easy to find in the town centre, next to the Ponte di Roma. The town is easily reachable by car or regional bus services.
