The Wolf's Spring in Greccio: the spring that gives you a wolf's appetite
The Fonte del Lupetto is a mineral water spring at the highest point of Greccio, a stone's throw from the town centre, at the foot of Monte Peschio. The water, already recognised as extremely pure in 1912, flows in a corner of woodland that is well worth the walk — and there is a curious story behind the name.
The origin of the name
There are two competing versions: the first says that the landowner drank this water so regularly that he developed a wolf's appetite — and the name stuck. The second tells of a wolf that devoured the people of the castle and lived in that wood, the water from the spring making it even more voracious.
Water with certified analysis
In 1912, Professor G. Trotterelli, director of the Royal Institute of Chemistry and Metallurgy of Terni, analysed the water and classified it as extremely pure, alkaline, lithia-bearing, diuretic and digestive, antiuric, recommended for ailments of the digestive organs and urinary tract, excellent against gout, kidney gravel, nephritis and loss of appetite. The fixed residue was 0.15 grams per litre: at the time considered low in minerals. Today, after years of neglect, work is underway to fully restore the spring so that people can once again enjoy its health-boosting water.
