Church of Our Lady of Loreto in Castrocielo: the small church built by the people in the Liri Valley
The Church of the Madonna di Loreto (Our Lady of Loreto) is located in Castrocielo, a village in the province of Frosinone, on the slopes of Monte Cairo, in the Liri Valley. Built in 1634 with the direct contribution of the local community, it is a simple building, with a single rectangular nave about 100m² in size, telling a story of nearly four centuries of popular devotion and resilience.
A church of the people, destroyed and reborn
The church was built with the active participation of the people of Castrocielo. Inside there are three stucco altars. The main one is dedicated to the Madonna di Loreto, with two niches housing statues of the Virgin Mary and the Redeemer. The other two more austere altars are dedicated to St Nicholas of Bari and to Pope Sylvester I. It was bombed heavily during the Second World War. The church remained abandoned for decades, until it was fully restored in 1986. In 1989, Monsignor Lorenzo Chiarinelli, bishop of the diocese, re-consecrated the church in a ceremony involving the entire village.
