Vallocchie Waterfall at Castel di Tora: hidden in the woods of Lake Turano
A few minutes from Castel di Tora, one of the most beautiful medieval villages in Italy overlooking Lake Turano, the Cascata delle Vallocchie lies hidden in a gorge at the foot of Monte Navegna. The waterfall entails a drop of around 12 metres over limestone rocks and dense vegetation, in the Monte Navegna and Monte Cervia Nature Reserve. The older members of the local population still call it "Busciu 'elle Coreara" — the ravens' hole — the birds that nested on the rock face until the last century.
The forest trail
The walk begins at the Agriturismo La Posta, following trail E13: steps and wooden boardwalks lead to the waterfall in 20 to 25 minutes. The route is short, but requires closed-toe shoes, as the ground can be slippery after rain.
When to go
Spring and autumn are the best periods: the stream runs fuller, and the woodland is bursting with colour. In summer the waterfall reduces to a trickle, but the coolness of the gorge still makes the walk worthwhile. Those looking for a longer hike can set off from the village of Stipes and descend along 2.5 km of forest trail.
