Montecassino Natural Monument: trekking along the “memory trails” of the Gustav Line
In Cassino, in the heart of the Ciociaria region, the Natural Monument of Montecassino has been created, a protected area that is also an open-air history book, taking us through nature and the Battle of Montecassino. Walking its “memory trails” means treading the ground along the Gustav Line. A place rich in flora and fauna, and dense with history.
In the footsteps of history
The trails walked today follow the old mule tracks and military roads — such as the famous Cavendish Road — used during the Second World War. This was the scene of fierce fighting. Since 2010, the Monti Aurunci Natural Park has managed the area with the aim of keeping the memory alive, restoring routes and preserving testimonies from those terrible months of 1944.
What to see along the way
The walk is a journey through time. It begins with a view over Rocca Janula, which dominates the plain, before reaching moving sites such as the Polish Military Cemetery. A marker at what is known as "Hill 593" recalls one of the most bitterly contested points. And in the background, ever-present, stands the unmistakable silhouette of Montecassino Abbey, rebuilt after its complete destruction.
Access to the trails of the Natural Monument is free of charge. Trekking shoes are recommended, and visitors are advised to bring water. The routes are waymarked and vary in difficulty, making them suitable for both experienced hikers and families.
