CAMUSAC in Cassino: contemporary art museum in a former industrial plant at the foot of Montecassino
CAMUSAC, Cassino Museo Arte Contemporanea, is situated in Via Casilina Nord, a few minutes from Montecassino Abbey. It opened in 2013, making use of the former warehouses of Longo S.p.A., a steel company. There are over 200 works in the collection, with names such as Alighiero Boetti, Jannis Kounellis, Sol LeWitt, Mario Merz, Louise Bourgeois and Yayoi Kusama.
From private collection to museum
Back in the 1990s, entrepreneur Sergio Longo started acquiring contemporary art under the guidance of art critic Bruno Corà. In 1996 the collection opened to the public through an agreement with the University of Cassino. In 2013 the transformation into a foundation and museum.
What to see
The museum covers 2,000 m² of indoor space: two vast exhibition halls - the industrial spaces work perfectly for large-scale works and a specialist library. But the outdoor park is the most surprising: sculptures and installations among the trees, freely accessible. Many works are in COR-TEN steel, processed in the very factory that now houses them.
