Baden Powell Park in Cassino: The City’s Second Green Lung
In the heart of Cassino, covering an area of approximately 10,000 square metres, Lord Baden Powell Park is the city’s second public green space after the Villa Comunale. The name is no accident: Robert Baden-Powell (1857–1941), British military officer and founder of the Scout movement in 1907, was raised to the peerage for the values of peace and community that his movement spread across the world. Values that the park embodies every day.
From cattle market to a citadel of local associations
The site has a curious history. For decades it was Cassino’s Campo Boario (cattle market); it then hosted the first Fiera Campionaria del Basso Lazio (Lower Lazio Trade Fair), which in the 1970s helped revive the local economy. Today, following a complete redevelopment completed in 2014, it has become what the Municipality calls the citadel of civic associations: with distinctive small buildings inside the park housing cultural and social organisations active in the area, the Casa della Cultura (House of Culture) being its focal point.
What can be seen today
The park has equipped a children’s playground and tree-lined avenues planted with species typical of the local flora. It is used daily by families, young people and older residents. Piazza Michele Giordano is a small square dedicated to the journalist and founder of Cassino’s first radio station.
