Castello di Re Ladislao (Castle of King Ladislaus): the medieval fortress that now houses Mastroianni’s art
The Castle of King Ladislaus dominates the historic center of Arpino, in Ciociaria, where medieval history meets contemporary art. Today the Castle is home to the Umberto Mastroianni Foundation, the largest museum dedicated to the sculptor from Ciociaria, where modern sculptures and ancient walls coexist without friction.
Built as a defensive stronghold in the 10th century, it takes its name from the King of Naples, Ladislaus I of Anjou-Durazzo, who in the year 1400 strengthened it with towers and defensive walls to have full control over the road leading to Rome.
But the real turning point came in the 20th century. After years of abandonment and various uses — it was even a wool mill — the municipality restored the structure with a view to it housing Mastroianni’s monumental works. The contrast is striking: the artist’s abstract geometries and “machines” appear to almost want to break out of the medieval walls.
Today, the castle’s rooms host the Mastroianni collection: bronzes, plasters, and drawings displayed without glass cases, directly related to the stone, tracing the master’s entire creative path. The terraces open onto wide views over the rooftops. Take your time in the courtyard — it's the best spot to appreciate the dimensions of the fortress. And don't miss the temporary exhibitions, which change frequently.
The Castle of King Ladislaus can be reached on foot from the historic center of the town via a short but steep climb. Parking is available along the lower walls; booking is recommended for groups and guided tours.
