Overview
In Arona, in the province of Novara, on a rocky, rounded outcrop, lies Rocca Borromea Park. Built around the defensive fortification of the same name, the area rises over 100 metres above the Novara shore of Lake Maggiore and offers breath-taking panoramic views.
Thanks to its strategic and scenic location, as far back as ancient times the park has always been a popular attraction among people. Fortified in the Middle Ages, for centuries the hill was ruled by the archbishops of Milan. It was then taken over by the Visconti and Borromeo families, followed by the Spanish, Austrians and French, until Napoleon ultimately ordered the defensive constructions to be demolished in the 19th century. Since then, very little remains of the fortress.
Visitors can spend time strolling or relaxing in the vast green spaces of Rocca Borromea Park, which offers stunning views of the lake.
