Overview
Orange Flag of the Italian Touring Club
Between the Romagna Riviera and the hills of the Cesenate Apennines, in the Valley of the Rubicon, Longiano is a perfect example of medieval urban planning. The historic center develops harmoniously on a hill, at the summit of which stands the Malatesta Fortress, offering a wonderful panoramic view (look for the iconic statue of the "Ragazzina" on the walls) and housing a superb and rich collection of modern and contemporary art: the Tito Balestra Foundation, with over 3,000 works by 20th-century artists like Guttuso, De Pisis, Morandi, Sironi, and many others.
The cultural offerings of Longiano certainly do not stop at the Fortress. Not to be missed are the Museum of Sacred Art, located in the Oratory of San Giuseppe, the Italian Cast Iron Museum, featuring unique urban furnishings produced between the 19th and 20th centuries, the Museum of the Territory, with exhibits and tools from the farming world, and the Gallery of the Masks of Commedia dell'Arte. A delightful 19th-century gem, still very active, is the Petrella Theatre, renowned for its extraordinary acoustics.
The fertile hills of the Rubicon Valley offer a variety of typical products: cherries, plums, apricots, DOP nectarines, fossa cheese and squacquerone cheese, extra virgin olive oil, and wines like Sangiovese and Trebbiano. Piadina is a must-try, often served with the cured meats of the prized "Mora Romagnola" breed. These flavors are central to numerous events, including the Vini e Sapori in Strada festival in July, while in December, during the Christmas period, the most important event is Longiano dei Presepi, where the town is beautifully decorated for the holidays and offers an unforgettable atmosphere.
