Overview
It is on ancient Compsa, considered Greek by some scholars, that the present Conza della Campania stands. In the centre of the old town centre, which was abandoned after the 1980 earthquake (the new town is about 2 km away), excavations have uncovered significant finds and structures, including part of the Roman forum, a building (possibly a temple or other public complex), an early Christian funerary stele and other ruins that now form an archaeological park. Nearby, it is worth visiting Lake Conza, an artificial basin spread over about 800 hectares and protected by the WWF.
