Bagnara Calabra is the small "capital of Calabrian swordfish". Set along the Costa Viola, the stretch of the Lower Tyrrhenian coast in the province of Reggio Calabria characterised by a marine alga that gives the entire coastline its distinctive colour.
The seaside town of Bagnara Calabra is also known as the birthplace of the "Bertè sisters" of Italian popular music – Loredana Bertè and Mia Martini, to whom a city monument is dedicated. Among the excellences of Calabrian food and wine, this splendid seaside town also stands out for the production of the prized Torrone di Bagnara IGP and Costa Viola IGT wines.
The seafront promenade of Bagnara Calabra, overlooking the Strait, is particularly charming, as is the historic centre in its higher position.
Among the oldest remains of Bagnara predating the devastating 1908 earthquake stands the 15th-century Aragonese Tower of Bagnara (also known as Capo Rocchi Tower), one of Calabria's coastal watchtowers.
In the historic centre it is possible to visit the Church of the Carmine, set on a square with panoramic views, as well as the Ruffo Ducal Castle, located slightly further uphill. From the summit of the hill of the same name begins the Marturano Trail, which allows you to return to the marina with a pleasant trek through greenery.
