Nestled among the hills of the Sila area near Crotone, the rural hamlet of Mesoraca has a history that is closely linked to one of the most popular Christian sanctuaries in the Calabria region. Surrounded by an unspoilt, authentic landscape, the Sanctuary of Mesoraca developed around a highly venerated statue completed in 1630. The wooden sculpture depicts the Gospel scene of the Ecce Homo, the harrowing moment when Pontius Pilate presents Jesus to the crowd in Palestine after his scourging. The statue was created by Giovan Francesco Pitorno, better known as Umile da Petralia, a famous Sicilian Franciscan friar who was passing through Calabria. Every seven years, Mesoraca fills with worshippers and pilgrims for the festivities dedicated to the Ecce Homo, which spread from the convent walls out into the village squares and streets.
