The origins of Tiriolo date back to a period between the end of the 4th century BC and the first three decades of the 3rd century BC. What further enhances the charm of this place, however, is the theory put forward by the German scholar Armin Wolf, who identified the Isthmus of Catanzaro with Homer's Scheria, that is, the "Land of the Phaeacians", the final stop in the wanderings of Ulysses after the victorious Trojan War. This legend inspired the monument created in the 1980s by the Calabrian sculptor Maurizio Carnevali, which can be admired in Piazza Italia.Alongside the Gianmartino Urban Archaeological Park and the Antiquarium of Tiriolo, Tiriolo offers a wide range of cultural and outdoor activities, starting with a visit to the historic centre, home to the splendid De Filippis Palace, Donati Palace and Schettini Palace, as well as traditional artisan workshops.
Also worth visiting is the Regional Costume Museum, where the star exhibit is the "pacchiana", the traditional costume of Tiriolo. Richly embroidered, it formed part of a bride's wedding dowry and was passed down from mother to daughter, bearing witness to a long-standing and well-documented tradition of textile production in this area. This tradition extends from Soveria Mannelli, home to Lanificio Leo, the oldest textile factory in Calabria – now celebrated through an outstanding corporate museum – through to Gimigliano, San Floro and Marcellinara.
