Gorgoglione

Overview

Gorgoglione's origins date back to the 4th century B.C., it belonged to the Della Marra family, who in 1070 built the Castle, of which only a few ruins remain today, and was later ruled by the Carafa and Spinelli families. Worth visiting is the Mother Church of Santa Maria Assunta, dating from the Baroque period but rebuilt in the 19th century, inside which is preserved a beautiful 15th-century statue of San Rocco, an 18th-century statue of the Madonna del Rosario and a valuable baptismal font. With its irregular profile, the territory of Gorgoglione is covered with beautiful woods and is rich in sandstone rocks commonly known as 'Gorgoglione stone'.
