Overview
At the southern edge of the Five Mile Plateau and the Maiella National Park, between Mount Greco and the Pizi mountains, it is the best known winter sports resort in Abruzzo. In the early 20th century, it was among the first mountain resorts to welcome tourists and, between 1943 and 1944, was one of the 'strongholds' of the Gustav Line between Ortona and Cassino. The historical centre boasts the Church of Santa Maria Assunta, with its Baroque travertine façade: inside is a rich gilded walnut pulpit in the shape of a Greek cross and painted and gilded wooden organs.
