Overview
Capodacqua is the small artificial lake of Capestrano on the Gran Sasso massif, also known as The small Atlantis of Abruzzo. Its history begins in 1965 when the construction of a dam, on the Tirino River, led to the filling of the water basin. The architectural structure of a paint factory, still visible on the surface, was only partially submerged, while the old mill, with the old paving of the lanes, was literally swallowed up by the water.
The lake, with its crystal-clear waters, is currently a popular tourist destination for diving enthusiasts because, during underwater exploration, it is quite exciting to discover what remains of a disused, now submerged world. For the less adventurous, it is still possible to see the ancient mill from the comfort of an electric boat, whose hull has a transparent glass bottom. On the other hand, it is prohibited to simply bathe due to environmental protection constraints aimed, in particular, at protecting avian fauna.
