Bagno Vignoni

Overview

Relaxation in the heart of the Sienese Middle Ages

A hamlet of the municipality of San Quirico d'Orcia, Bagno Vignoni is located in the Val d'Orcia, close to the Via Francigena. The waters flowing here have been used since Roman times for thermal purposes. Even today, in the Piazza delle Sorgenti, water with healing properties flows out of an enormous 16th-century rectangular pool at a temperature of 52°C. From there, the water heads towards the steep escarpment of the Mulini Nature Park. The Church of San Giovanni, whose single nave culminates in a Baroque-style altar, is located in the small historic centre.

The area is well suited to various trips and excursions in medieval Tuscany. Stop in Borgo di Castelvecchio, famous for the production of Rosso and Brunello di Montalcino wines, and in Radicofani, with its Rocca and the Bosco Isabella urban park. Not to be missed is a stop in Montepulciano, famous for its fine DOCG wine, and Pienza, the “ideal city” of the Renaissance. Here, the cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, Palazzo Borgia and Palazzo Piccolomini are worth a visit.

For the inexhaustible, an hour's drive will take you to Lake Trasimeno to discover the local food and wine specialities on the border between Tuscany and Umbria.
